Pekalongan – Mufidatun Wafiyah, a student from the Diponegoro University (Undip) Thematic Community Service Program (KKN) at the Bachelor of Nursing Program, recently conducted an educational session on cervical cancer awareness for seventh-grade students at SMP 15 Pekalongan.

The event took place in the school’s computer laboratory on Wednesday (22/01/2025) and aimed to raise awareness about the importance of the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination. Data indicates that a significant number of seventh-grade students remain unaware of the crucial role of the HPV vaccine in preventing cervical cancer.

To address this gap in knowledge, Mufidatun initiated the SEHAT KAVI (Health Education on Cervical Cancer) program, which focuses on educating students about early symptoms, risk factors, screening procedures, and HPV vaccination. This initiative aligns with the overarching theme of the UNDIP Thematic KKN: “Community Empowerment through the Optimization of HPV Vaccination for School-Age Children in Pekalongan.”

Cervical cancer is a malignant disease affecting the uterine cervix, primarily caused by HPV. It ranks as the second most prevalent cancer among women in Indonesia. According to data from Kelurahan Pringrejo, Pekalongan City has recorded 32 cases of cervical cancer.

The educational session commenced with participant registration, followed by a presentation utilizing PowerPoint slides and informative posters detailing cervical cancer and the significance of HPV vaccination. The session also featured an interactive Q&A segment to enhance comprehension and encourage students to adopt healthier lifestyles.

One of the seventh-grade students, Eka Khilmawati, expressed her appreciation for the initiative, stating that the session significantly broadened her understanding of cervical cancer and the importance of HPV vaccination.

“Thank you for teaching us about cervical cancer. Now we understand the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle to prevent it,” Eka remarked.

The program concluded with a review of the key takeaways and the recitation of the slogan: “Immune with Vaccination to Protect Your Future.”

Through this initiative, Mufidatun hopes that seventh-grade students at SMP 15 Pekalongan will embrace a healthy lifestyle and actively participate in HPV vaccination efforts to prevent cervical cancer. [MW-AN]
